The price of Dafoe
As a courtesy to the enjera eaters, I thought I’d post an entry in English. First of all, I would like to introduce them to the blog. Blog, this is enjera eater. Enjera eater, this is blog. I am Infinity’s Neighbour and this blog deals with The End, with endings, with the finite, with infinite ends and final infinites, etc. (Very appropriate under the circumstances, I believe.) You know, for instance, that a movie was good when you see “The End” on the screen and you feel sad. A good director will pick some effective piece as exit music, so that you can take that final feeling with you, resonating in your head for a while. I often try to anticipate finishing a book to the sound of a good tune, just to ease out the abandonment feeling you get (meaning, I get) when you put it down for the last time. I don’t know whether the enjera eaters noticed, but exit music on our last supper was some kind of blues, Ethiopian perhaps, but with a distinctive bayou flavour.
Anyway, sequel is often the thought in the minds of the viewers exiting with a smile or a tear. Some actors will, in all likelihood, move on to better projects, but if the price is just right you can always get Willem Dafoe to wear a green bodysuit again for another Spider-man movie, or you can get some other guy to come all the way from Singapore to play a German returning triumphantly after a battle of wits with an Australian (or any other similar postmodern plot).
